Death metal band OSSASTORIUM unveils new single and a music video filmed in an unexpected location
Kaunas-based metal band OSSASTORIUM, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, presents its new single “Open the Gate” along with a striking music video filmed in a place where death metal has never thundered before.
The video was shot in a unique historic setting – one of the most magnificent interwar buildings in Kaunas, formerly home to the Ministry of Justice and the Parliament, and better known today to locals as the Philharmonic Hall.
Throughout its century-long history, this building has witnessed everything from Nazi trials and parliamentary sessions to countless musical performances. However, the band members are confident that OSSASTORIUM is the first death metal band ever to test the strength of these walls.
Frontman Saulius Rimas expressed his appreciation that the Philharmonic’s management was unafraid to welcome extreme music into their space. He also noted that the interior of this UNESCO-listed interwar architectural masterpiece subtly incorporates elements of an ancient temple: semicircular Doric columns supporting a glowing dome symbolizing the sky – a perfect fit for the video’s concept. The song “Open the Gate” explores the theme of a human encounter with the boundary between the safe, familiar world and an unknown metaphysical reality: the forbidden fruit tempts, but it can also destroy.
And what about the most important ingredient – the music? The soundtrack, recorded at Pavel Daniels Studio, is far from a typical example of the death metal genre.
“We have never really fit into traditional death metal boundaries, and ‘Open the Gate’ pushes them even further,” the musicians say. The track blends elements of various heavy music styles – progressive rhythms, crushing heavy riffs, cold surgical precision, and at the same time a subtly melancholic melodic line.
“We might sound immodest, but we believe this track contains some of the best riffs in the history of Lithuanian metal,” OSSASTORIUM states boldly.
The video was directed and shot by Rytis Titas, who has previously worked with well-known bands such as Alphaville and Diary of Dreams. He is currently producing a documentary film titled “Gaivalų Ūkis” about the underground metal and rock scene in Kaunas that flourished during the first decades of Lithuanian independence. OSSASTORIUM is featured among the film’s protagonists, and footage captured during the making of “Open the Gate” will also appear in the upcoming documentary.
